About Charlie

Hello Everybody, my name is Charlie…and I’m a golf-o-holic.

Hey Charlie

I’ve been golfing for about 40 years now. That would mean that I am now classified as a “Senior Golfer”. As such, I have discovered lately that getting help and finding the right way to teach and train is completely different from trying to teach a teenager or young adult. Sometimes, the mechanics needed to accommodate the training just isn’t practical for us golfers who don’t have the endless flexibility or balance we had 30 or even 20 years ago. My wife recently took up the game so we could spend more time together. As I was looking for resources to help her get started in the game, I realized that it would be so much better, and easier if there was one place that could be referenced for whatever facet of the game was in need of help.

Getting Started & Getting Better

I never had the opportunity to play golf until I was out of high school and just happened to get invited by a couple of friends one afternoon. I had to borrow their fathers clubs and had no idea what I was doing. Lucky for me, I had been a baseball player growing up and had some idea of how to swing a club and make contact. That afternoon turned out to be a changing point in my life. I enjoyed that day and started returning every chance I had.

About that time, I began a new job and found a co-worker who also played golf. I bought my first set of clubs from him for the cost of covering a bar tab one evening. The woods were old Persimmon woods, and the irons appeared to be angled slabs of steel. They were nowhere near the caliber of clubs available on the market today. But I learned to hit them, and kept learning all I could about the game.

A month later I was out with my friend one morning, and I remember hitting a shot up a hill toward the green and watching it head straight at the hole. When we arrived near the green, I couldn’t find my ball. I was looking all around the back of the green in the longish grass, and my friend called me over to the hole. There at the bottom sat my ball. I was in shock, as was he. That was my first Eagle, and I was instantly hooked for life when I saw that ball sitting in the cup.

Since then, the game has undergone a lot of change. Woods are now metal, the size of the clubface is twice as big, the balls are more aerodynamic. And yet, we all still struggle to try and perfect our game.

The one thing that remains constant, and is inherent to every golfer that enjoys, or endures, or loves, or despises the game,(which describes the gamut of feelings in a single 18 hole round) is that we all keep coming back in search of the one elusive goal. We all want to get better. The beginner wants to break 100. The 25 handicap wants to break 90. Each individual has their own goals and their own ideas on how to accomplish them. But the one commonality is that every golfer wants to be better.

“I’m pulling for you, We’re all in this together,” …(Red Green)

As my wife continues to learn the game, I am, at the same time getting ready to try my luck at qualifying for some local tournaments.

I know this isn’t an overnight endeavor and you can’t just flick a switch.

I want to share our adventures with you all, as well as sharing some of the resources we are putting to use to help us achieve our goals, little by little.

Hopefully, by taking you along, our struggles may resonate with you and you will realize you are not alone. If there is anything you may be able to pass along, or if there is something you are searching for and can’t seem to locate, please feel free to reach out and share.

All the best,

Charlie
